This engraved portrait captures the distinguished visage of Walter Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch and 7th Duke of Queensberry, in the late 19th century. Born on December 26, 1806, the Duke was a prominent figure in Scottish and British history, holding the titles of Duke of Buccleuch and Duke of Queensberry since 1812 and 1818, respectively. Buccleuch was a prominent landowner, with extensive estates in Scotland and England, and was known for his patronage of the arts and sciences. He was also a keen sportsman, particularly known for his involvement in boxing, for which he is best known as the eponym of the Queensberry Rules, the standardized set of rules for the sport that were first published in 1867. The Duke's impressive political career included serving as a Member of Parliament, a Lord-in-Waiting, and a Lord Chamberlain. He was also a Privy Counsellor and a Knight of the Thistle. In 1866, he was appointed as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. This portrait, likely created around 1884, showcases the Duke's regal bearing and impeccable attire, reflecting his status as a nobleman and a man of great wealth and influence.
