EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, The Duchess of Albany, formerly Princess Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont, is seen with her grandchildren in 1910. The Duchess, who was married to Prince Leopold for just two years before his untimely death in 1884, is depicted here with a tender expression as she sits amongst her beloved offspring. Three of the six children gathered around her are those of her eldest daughter, Princess Alice of Albany, Countess of Athlone: Prince Rupert of Teck, Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg, and Prince Johann Leopold of Saxe-Coburg. The remaining three are her sons, Charles Edward, Duke of Albany and Saxe-Coburg: Prince Maurice of Teck, who tragically died on a family visit to Coburg when he was six months old, Prince Hubertus of Saxe-Coburg, and Prince May of Teck. Despite being married for such a short time, Helena mourned Leopold for nearly forty years, a testament to the deep love and connection they shared. The Duchess, who was born in 1861 in Waldeck-Pyrmont, Germany, was a member of the House of Waldeck-Pyrmont, and her marriage to Leopold, who was the Duke of Albany and the sixth in line to the British throne, was a significant union between two European royal families. This poignant image captures a moment in history, showcasing the close bond between the Duchess and her grandchildren, and the enduring legacy of love and family that transcended the passing of time.
