The Column, Savernake Forest

The Column, Savernake Forest. First mention of a woodland " Safernoc" was made in 934 in the written records of the Saxon king Athelstan, but the land passed into Norman ownership soon after the Norman invasion of 1066. The Royal Forest was established in the 12th century, covering an area of some 150 square miles! The Ailesbury Column was purchased by Thomas Bruce Brudenell, the Earl of Ailesbury, as an impressive viewpoint at the end of a vista from Tottenham House. The Forest is now owned and maintained by the Earl of Cardigan

The Column in Savernake Forest: A Historical Landmark in Wiltshire, England This photograph showcases The Column, an impressive monument nestled within the verdant expanse of Savernake Forest. Savernake Forest holds a rich history that dates back to the Saxon era, with the first written mention of the woodland appearing in 934 in the records of King Athelstan. However, the land was soon passed into Norman ownership following the Norman invasion of 1066. In the 12th century, the Royal Forest was established, covering an expansive area of approximately 150 square miles. The Column, also known as the Ailesbury Column, was purchased by Thomas Bruce Brudenell, the Earl of Ailesbury, in the late 18th century. The monument served as an impressive viewpoint at the end of a breathtaking vista from Tottenham House. The Earl of Ailesbury, a man of refined taste and historical appreciation, saw the potential in The Column as a symbol of the forest's grandeur and the region's storied past. Today, Savernake Forest is owned and maintained by the Earl of Cardigan, who continues to preserve the natural beauty and historical significance of this ancient woodland. The Column stands as a testament to the forest's rich history and the enduring allure of its natural splendor. This photograph captures the essence of a bygone era, inviting us to imagine the tales and stories that have unfolded within the forest's embrace.
