1932 Arrested Bonus Protest Riot Veterans

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This powerful image captures the tense moment during the 1932 Bonus Army protest in Washington D.C., when a veteran leader was forcibly arrested by U.S. government forces. The Bonus Army, also known as the Bonus Expeditionary Force, was a group of approximately 15,000 World War I veterans who had marched on the nation's capital to demand early payment of their bonus certificates, which were promised to them but not due to be paid until 1945. The veterans, many of whom were destitute and struggling to survive during the Great Depression, set up camps in Anacostia Flats and refused to disperse despite repeated requests from the government. On May 12, 1932, President Hoover ordered the U.S. Army to evict the veterans from the encampment. The ensuing clashes resulted in the arrest of hundreds of veterans, including the man in this photograph. The image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by American veterans and the sometimes fraught relationship between the government and its citizens during times of economic hardship. The Bonus Army protest is an important chapter in American history, and this arrest serves as a powerful symbol of the determination and resilience of those who fought for their rights." This photograph is a historical record of a significant event in American history and should be treated with respect and care.
