EDITORS COMMENTS
September 1914: The Boche at Reims - A Historical Moment Captured in Time In the early days of World War I, the German army, under the command of General von der Marwiz, advanced towards the French city of Reims. The strategic importance of Reims, as a key transportation hub and the site of the historic Reims Cathedral, made it a prime target for the Germans. By September 1914, the German forces had managed to set up a field camp in the Parois, the suburbs of the city, surrounding the cathedral. The photograph you see here, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, captures a moment in time during the German occupation of Reims. The image shows the stark contrast between the peaceful surroundings of the Parois and the chaos and destruction brought about by the war. German soldiers can be seen setting up their camp, with tents pitched and supplies being unloaded. The Reims Cathedral, a symbol of French history and culture, looms in the background, its majesty undiminished despite the turmoil around it. However, this moment of relative calm was not to last. The Allied forces, led by General Joffre, were planning a counter-attack to push back the Germans and retake Reims. The battle for the city would be fierce and bloody, with both sides suffering heavy losses. Ultimately, the Allied forces were successful, and the Germans were forced to retreat from Reims in late September 1914. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the events of the Western Front during World War I, a time of great upheaval and change. It captures a moment of transition, as the German forces set up camp in the shadow of the historic Reims Cathedral, only to be driven out by the Allied counter-attack. The photograph is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, as well as the enduring power of history.
