EDITORS COMMENTS
"This engraving captures the historic Bishop Rock Lighthouse in the Scilly Isles, as it stood in 1849, just two years before its tragic destruction. Designed by Sir James Walker and Henry Burges, the lighthouse was a groundbreaking engineering feat, intended to allow high seas to pass through its supports unimpeded. The design featured cast iron columns and wrought iron supports, which unfortunately proved to be insufficient against the wrath of the Atlantic Ocean. The Bishop Rock Lighthouse was completed in 1847 and stood proudly for only two years before being destroyed by storms on the 5th of February, 1850. The design was a bold attempt to address the challenges of constructing a lighthouse in one of the most treacherous and exposed locations in the world. However, the cast iron columns and wrought iron supports, which were meant to withstand the harsh marine environment, were not strong enough to withstand the relentless battering of the waves. The image of the Bishop Rock Lighthouse in its 1849 glory is an important historical record, showcasing the engineering ingenuity of the time, as well as the limitations of technology in the face of nature's power. The tragic story of the Bishop Rock Lighthouse serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by those who dared to build and maintain lighthouses in some of the most inhospitable locations in the world." This engraving is an original from the Mary Evans Picture Library and is a valuable addition to any historical or maritime collection. It provides a unique glimpse into the past, offering insights into the engineering and design challenges of the time, as well as the importance of lighthouses in ensuring the safety of mariners. The image is a testament to the enduring allure of the sea and the human spirit that continues to strive to conquer its mysteries.
