The Belfry, Dunkirk, Belgium
The Belfry, Dunkirk, Belgium, built in 1440. By some miracle of fate, the Belfry escaped the almost-complete destruction of the town in 1940. A panorama of the entire town can be enjoyed from the sixth floor of this 65 metre-high building. It is currently separated from the Saint Eloi Church (of which it was originally the belltower). The Church houses the tomb of local hero Jean Bart. Today at its base, there is a cenotaph dedicated to the memory of the soldiers of the First World War

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Belfry of Dunkirk, Belgium: A Survivor of History The Belfry of Dunkirk, located in the heart of the historic town center, is a testament to the rich history of this Belgian port city. Originally built as the bell tower for the Saint Eloi Church in 1440, this impressive structure stands at a height of 65 meters and offers a breathtaking panorama of the entire town from its sixth floor. Despite the almost-complete destruction of Dunkirk during the Second World War, the Belfry miraculously survived the onslaught. It is now separated from the Saint Eloi Church, which houses the tomb of local hero Jean Bart. The Church also serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War, with a cenotaph dedicated to the memory of the soldiers who fought and fell in the conflict. The Belfry's intricate, centuries-old stonework tells a story of its own, bearing witness to the passage of time. The intricate carvings and gargoyles that adorn the tower are a testament to the craftsmanship of the artisans who built it over six centuries ago. As you stand at the base of the Belfry, taking in its grandeur, it's easy to imagine the bustling market square that once surrounded it, filled with merchants, traders, and locals going about their daily lives. The Belfry of Dunkirk is not just a historical monument, but a living link to the past, inviting us to explore the stories and secrets that lie within its walls.
