The Battle of Majuba Hill

The Transvaal War: the Battle of Majuba Hill. Majuba Hill was the main battle of the First Boer War, and one which the British resoundingly lost. The officer to the left with binoculars is General Sir George Colley, commanding officer, who was killed by Boer marksmen; to facilitate his ascent of the hill (says the ILN), he took off his boots and during the fighting wore only socks and slippers; the officer in the foreground to whom the doctor is offering a flask is Major L C Singleton of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders who died of his wounds. The figure on the extreme left is J A Cameron, Special Correspondent of the Standard. Date: 27th February 1881

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Transvaal War: The Battle of Majuba Hill, 27th February 1881 This poignant photograph captures the aftermath of the Battle of Majuba Hill, the main engagement of the First Boer War, which took place on 27th February 1881 in South Africa. The British Army, under the command of General Sir George Colley, suffered a resounding defeat at the hands of the Boer forces. In the foreground, a doctor offers a flask to Major L C Singleton of the 92nd Gordon Highlanders, who lies wounded on the ground. The officer to the left, with binoculars around his neck, is General Sir George Colley, who was killed by Boer marksmen during his ascent of Majuba Hill. He had removed his boots to facilitate his climb, and during the fighting, he wore only socks and slippers. The figure on the extreme left is J A Cameron, Special Correspondent of The Standard, who witnessed the events firsthand. The 58th and 92nd Regiments, both prominent in the battle, are represented in the photograph. The 58th, also known as the Royal Ulster Rifles, is seen in the background, while the 92nd Gordon Highlanders are in the foreground. The Battle of Majuba Hill marked a significant turning point in the conflict between the British and the Boers, leading to the signing of the Treaty of Pretoria in August 1881, which ended the war. This photograph offers a glimpse into the harsh realities of war and the sacrifices made by soldiers on both sides.
