EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning silver plate, known as The Ascot Prize Plate, dates back to 1847 and is a testament to the rich history of horse racing at Ascot. The plate features two exquisitely crafted vases, the Emperor's Vase and the Queen's Vase, both adorned with intricate gold decorations. The Emperor's Vase, located at the center of the plate, is a magnificent piece of silver ware, standing tall with a height of approximately 18 inches. Its design is inspired by ancient Roman architecture, with intricate columns and ornate detailing. The vase is topped with a gold-plated figure of a Roman emperor, symbolizing the grandeur and majesty of the sport of kings. The Queen's Vase, located to the right of the Emperor's Vase, is equally impressive. It is a smaller vase, but no less intricately designed. The vase is adorned with delicate gold filigree and features a gold-plated figure of a queen, symbolizing the grace and elegance of the monarchy. The Ascot Prize Plate was originally used to present the winning jockey with a replica of the vase as a trophy. The actual vases were kept at Ascot Racecourse and were used to present the winning owner with a cup of wine from the vase. The tradition of presenting a replica trophy to the winning jockey continues to this day, while the actual vases are now displayed in the Royal Collection. This beautiful silver plate is a reminder of the rich history and tradition of horse racing at Ascot, and the connection between the sport and the monarchy. Its intricate design and historical significance make it a true treasure of British sporting history.
