EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing sequence of two photographs, we witness a demonstration of Bartitsu, a groundbreaking martial art developed by Edward William Barton-Wright in the late 19th century. The images, taken from an article published in Pearson's Magazine in February 1901, illustrate a "very serviceable way to disable a taller man than yourself" when confronted under unequal conditions. Barton-Wright, a British military officer and sportsman, had traveled to Japan to study various martial arts and brought back a unique fusion of techniques, which he named Bartitsu. This innovative system of self-defense incorporated elements of jujitsu, savate, and cane fighting. In the first photograph, we see Barton-Wright, a man of average height, standing face-to-face with a much taller opponent. Despite the height difference, Barton-Wright maintains a confident and assertive stance, his walking stick held firmly in his right hand. The second photograph captures the moment of execution, as Barton-Wright uses a combination of quick footwork, deft stick work, and grappling techniques to disarm and disable the larger man. Barton-Wright's article in Pearson's Magazine, titled "Self-Defence with a Walking-Stick," provided valuable insights into the practical application of Bartitsu, emphasizing the importance of balance, agility, and adaptability in self-defense situations. The photographs serve as a testament to the effectiveness of Bartitsu in overcoming adversity, regardless of size or strength disparities. These images offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of martial arts and the development of Bartitsu, a precursor to modern self-defense systems. The art of Bartitsu continues to inspire and influence martial artists and self-defense enthusiasts around the world.
