Thailand - Ayutthaya - Ruins

Ruins at Ayutthaya - the capital of Ayutthaya province in Thailand. The city was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, who came here to escape a smallpox outbreak in Lop Buri, and proclaimed it the capital of his kingdom, often referred to as the Ayutthaya kingdom or Siam. Ayutthaya was named after the city of Ayodhya in India, the birthplace of Rama in the Ramayana. In 1767 the city was destroyed by the Burmese army, and the ruins of the old city now form the Ayutthaya historical park, which is recognized internationally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

EDITORS COMMENTS
A Haunting Glimpse into the Past: Ayutthaya, Thailand's Ancient Ruins Step back in time as you wander through the enchanting ruins of Ayutthaya, the ancient capital city of Thailand and the Ayutthaya province. Founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, Ayutthaya was once a thriving metropolis, renowned for its grandeur and prosperity. Named after the birthplace of Rama in the Indian epic Ramayana, Ayodhya, this city was often referred to as the Ayutthaya kingdom or Siam. The city's rich history is etched in every stone, with magnificent temples, palaces, and statues standing as silent witnesses to the past. However, Ayutthaya's story is not without its share of tragedy. In 1767, the city was mercilessly destroyed by the Burmese army, leaving behind a haunting landscape of ruins. Today, the remains of Ayutthaya form the Ayutthaya Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts visitors from all corners of the globe. The park is home to numerous temples, including Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, Wat Mahathat, and Wat Ratchaburana, each with its unique charm and historical significance. The ruins of Ayutthaya are a poignant reminder of the city's storied past, with towering columns standing tall amidst the foliage, Buddha statues nestled in the shadows, and intricate carvings adorning the temple walls. As you explore the ancient city, you can't help but be captivated by the sense of history that lingers in the air, making for an unforgettable journey into Thailand's past.
