EDITORS COMMENTS
Temple Bar Removed: A Historical Snapshot of Obstruction and Neglect This evocative photograph captures the moment of Temple Bar's removal from its long-standing location at the entrance to the Strand in London, in 1877. The Temple Bar, a picturesque but terrible obstacle to traffic, was a historic gateway that once marked the boundary between the City of London and the City of Westminster. Its intricate design and grandeur made it a popular subject for artists and photographers, yet its presence caused significant inconvenience to the growing traffic in the city. Despite its historical significance, the decision was made to remove the Temple Bar, and it was subsequently relocated to Theobalds Park, near Waltham Cross. However, the neglected structure was sadly overlooked and neglected in its new home, far from the bustling streets of London. The Temple Bar, which dates back to 1672, was originally designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Sir John Vanbrugh. The gateway was adorned with statues of Queen Elizabeth I and King James II, as well as the coats of arms of the City of London and the City of Westminster. Its removal from its original location was a significant moment in London's history, marking the end of an era and the beginning of modern traffic management. In 2004, the Temple Bar was restored and rebuilt at Paternoster Square, near St. Paul's Cathedral, where it now stands as a popular tourist attraction and a reminder of London's rich history. This photograph, taken during the removal process, provides a unique snapshot of a historical moment and the contrast between the past and the present.
