EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph takes us back in time to the year 1877, capturing the "forlorn condition" of Temple Bar in all its glory. The image showcases a scene of ruinous and collapsed adjoining buildings surrounding this historic gate between the Cities of London and Westminster. Constructed by the renowned Sir Christopher Wren in 1672, this incarnation of Temple Bar stood as a symbol of grandeur for over two centuries. However, fate had different plans for this architectural marvel. In 1878, it was sadly removed to make way for road widening purposes. Yet, thanks to meticulous efforts, much of the original stonework was salvaged and used in a reconstruction that can now be admired at Paternoster Square. The engraving itself exudes an air of nostalgia with its intricate details and Victorian charm. It transports us back to an era where horse-drawn carriages roamed these ancient streets while gentlemen donned top hats and ladies wore elegant gowns. As we gaze upon this print from Historic England's Mayson Beeton Collection, we are reminded not only of the passage of time but also how history shapes our present landscape. This photo serves as a poignant reminder that even though physical structures may crumble or disappear entirely, their legacy lives on through photographs like these – preserving moments frozen forever in time.
