Caught Convert Dragon Marthe Monster Opportunity Processes Provence Tarascon Townsfolk Recalling Tarasque

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the annual procession of the Tarasque, a legendary dragon-like monster, through the picturesque town of Tarascon in Provence, France. Dating back to the 13th century, the Tarasque is said to have been tamed by Saint Martha, or Ste Marthe, who converted the townsfolk to Christianity during the Middle Ages. According to the local legend, the Tarasque, a fearsome beast with the body of a dragon and the head of a boar, terrorized the town of Tarascon for centuries. The townspeople lived in constant fear of the monster, which would emerge from the Rhone River to wreak havoc on their homes and livestock. One day, Ste Marthe, a brave and compassionate saint, decided to confront the Tarasque and put an end to its reign of terror. Armed with nothing but her faith and her courage, she approached the monster and commanded it to be still. To the amazement of the townspeople, the Tarasque obeyed, and Ste Marthe led it through the streets of Tarascon as a sign of its submission to Christianity. The annual procession of the Tarasque is a testament to this remarkable story, which has been passed down through generations. The townsfolk of Tarascon still celebrate this tradition every year, dressing up a large effigy of the Tarasque and parading it through the streets, accompanied by musicians, dancers, and other festivities. This photograph, taken in 1909, captures the essence of this unique and fascinating custom, which continues to captivate visitors and locals alike. The image is a reminder of the rich history and cultural traditions that can be found in the charming province of Provence, France.
