Established in 1868 by local businessmen, including James Hall, as a charitable institution to provide shelter and training for Tyneside waifs and prepare them for naval service, the Wellesley became the boys' home and base in 1874. The boys, dressed in their uniforms, are seen working diligently on making linen shirts under the watchful eye of their supervisor.
