The Tabard, also known as The Talbot Inn, was a historic coaching inn that played a significant role in the annals of English history. Located at the junction of Borough High Street and Tabard Street, the inn was a popular stopover for travelers making their way to and from Canterbury and London. The scene depicted in this photograph showcases the inn's courtyard, where a horse-drawn wagon is parked, its driver and passengers having just finished their meal or a refreshing drink. The Tabard was renowned for its excellent food and drink, making it an essential pitstop for weary travelers. The inn's Tudor-style architecture, with its timber-framed facade and thatched roof, adds to the charming ambiance. The Tabard Inn held historical significance as well, as it was the setting for Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. In the prologue to the tales, Chaucer describes the innkeeper as "Hosynas Hoot," and the inn as "The Tabard at Southwerk, by the Tabard Roke." The inn's connection to Chaucer's classic work further cemented its place in English literature and history. Unfortunately, the Tabard Inn met its demise in 1876, when it was demolished to make way for new developments.
