In this photograph from the early 1900s, Swedish explorer Sven Hedin (1865-1952) and his two companions are seen disguised as pilgrims, leading their caravan towards the Tibet frontier. Guided by Lama Schereb, the group is making their way to Arka-Tag, a crucial crossing point between China and Tibet. Sven Hedin, a renowned explorer and cartographer, embarked on several expeditions to Asia between 1896 and 1935. His most notable journey was the Swedish Central Asian Expedition (1901-1908), during which he aimed to explore and map the vast, uncharted territories of Central Asia. As they approached the Tibetan border, Hedin and his team knew they would face significant challenges. Tibet was a closed society, and foreigners were not welcome. To ensure their safety and the success of their mission, they decided to disguise themselves as pilgrims. Lama Schereb, a respected religious figure, agreed to guide the group through the treacherous terrain and help them navigate the complex cultural landscape of Tibet. With their faces concealed and dressed as monks, Hedin and his companions blended in with the local pilgrims, making their way towards Arka-Tag.
