EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the Nobel Laureate Svante Arrhenius, a Swedish chemist, in 1927. Arrhenius, born on February 19, 1859, is considered a pioneer in the fields of physical chemistry and electrochemistry. He is best known for his groundbreaking work on the greenhouse effect and the role of carbon dioxide in climate change. Arrhenius' research on the electrolysis of water and the concept of ionization helped establish the science of electrochemistry. However, it was his work on the greenhouse effect that would leave a lasting impact on the scientific community and the world at large. In 1896, Arrhenius published a paper in which he theorized that increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere could lead to a global temperature increase. His calculations, based on the then-current understanding of the greenhouse effect, predicted a temperature rise of 5 to 6 degrees Celsius. Although his predictions were initially met with skepticism, Arrhenius' work laid the foundation for modern climate science. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1903, together with Jacobus van't Hoff and Walther Nernst, for his work on electrolytes. This photograph, taken in 1927, shows Arrhenius in his later years, with a distinguished appearance and a thoughtful expression. It serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to the scientific world and the enduring impact of his work on our understanding of the natural world and the human role in shaping the climate.
