This poignant photograph captures the survivors of the Charge of the Light Brigade, taken thirty-six years after the fateful event during the Crimean War. The Charge of the Light Brigade, which took place on December 7, 1854, was a cavalry charge against a much larger Russian force, ordered by Lord Raglan due to a misunderstood command. The disastrous charge resulted in the loss of 110 British soldiers, with another 160 wounded. By 1890, many of the surviving veterans were facing financial hardship, leading to this charitable photograph being taken for their benefit. The image, which was imported from the Illustrated London News, depicts twenty-one survivors gathered together, their faces etched with the signs of aging and the scars of war. Their uniforms, though faded and worn, still bear the insignia of their regiments. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war, and the enduring impact it can have on the lives of those who serve.
