This evocative image captures the historic moment of the Surrender of Montefrio in 1486, a pivotal event in the Reconquista, the long-lasting process of reclaiming Spain for Christianity. In the foreground, King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile stand triumphantly, their regal attire and stern expressions conveying the power and determination that led to the final defeat of the Moorish kingdoms in Spain. Behind them, a group of Moorish chiefs, dressed in flowing robes and turbans, submit to the Christian monarchs. The surrender took place in Montefrio, a hilltop town in the province of Granada, which had been under Moorish rule since the 8th century. The chiefs, aware of the inevitable outcome, had come to negotiate terms of surrender, hoping to preserve some semblance of their culture and way of life. The background of the print shows the imposing walls of Montefrio, with the rolling hills and mountains of southern Spain stretching out in the distance. The scene is further enlivened by the inclusion of a mortar and pestle, a symbol of the military might that had been brought to bear on the Moorish stronghold.
