Satellite view of Cuba
January 1, 2010 - Satellite view of Cuba showing wispy clouds and some fading jet contrails. The waters are jewel-like: turquoise, bright blue, and emerald green near the islands, as well as the deeper blue of the Gulf of Mexico (top left) and the Atlantic Ocean (right). The brighter colors surrounding the Bahamas (the islands north of Cuba) are caused by the relatively shallow waters over the Little and Great Bahama Banks. The brightly-colored waters around Cuba and Florids tip (visible at the top of the image) could be a consequence of shallow waters, but could also be colored by a larger presence of microscopic marine organisms, such as algae and phytoplankton, which lend a darker-green tinge to the water

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning satellite view of Cuba, captured on January 1,2010, showcases the natural beauty and vibrant colors that adorn this Caribbean island. Wispy clouds float gracefully across the sky, while fading jet contrails leave their mark in the atmosphere. The waters surrounding Cuba are a true spectacle to behold - jewel-like shades of turquoise, bright blue, and emerald green shimmer near the islands. As we move further away from Cuba towards the top left corner of the image, we encounter the deeper blue hues of the Gulf of Mexico. To the right lies the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. However, it is around the Bahamas where our eyes are drawn to an explosion of brighter colors. These vivid tones result from relatively shallow waters over both Little and Great Bahama Banks. Interestingly enough, similar brightly-colored waters can also be observed around Cuba's tip and Florida (visible at the top). While shallow waters may contribute to these vibrant hues, another possibility arises - microscopic marine organisms such as algae and phytoplankton could be present in larger quantities here. These tiny organisms lend a darker-green tinge to water bodies they inhabit. This photograph captures not only a breathtaking landscape but also invites us to ponder upon nature's intricate workings within these beautiful realms.
