EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the tranquil beauty of Robert Louis Stevenson's writing retreat at Vailima, Samoa, where the renowned Scottish author spent the latter years of his life. The image, taken in the late 19th century, shows Stevenson seated on the balcony of his home, pen in hand, gazing out at the breathtaking vista of Vaea Mountain in the background. Stevenson, a celebrated poet, novelist, and travel writer, had arrived in Samoa in 1890 with his wife Fanny and their young stepson Lloyd Osbourne. They were in search of a healthier climate for Fanny, who was suffering from tuberculosis. The family settled in Vailima, a picturesque village on the island of Upolu, and built a simple bungalow, which they named "Villa Vailima." The serene surroundings of Vailima proved to be an inspiring environment for Stevenson, who wrote some of his most famous works during his time there, including "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," "The Master of Ballantrae," and "Weir of Hermiston." The author's connection to Samoa and its people also deeply influenced his writing, as evidenced in his novels "The South Seas" and "The Beach of Falesa." Stevenson's time in Samoa was not without its challenges, however. He faced numerous health issues, and in 1893, Fanny tragically passed away. Despite these hardships, Stevenson continued to write and explore the island, eventually passing away himself in 1894 at the age of 44. Today, Stevenson's legacy lives on in the beautiful and historic village of Vailima, where visitors can still visit his gravesite and the restored bungalow that once served as his writing sanctuary. The stunning backdrop of Vaea Mountain remains a constant reminder of the inspiring environment that fueled the imagination of one of Scotland's greatest literary figures.
