EDITORS COMMENTS
Atop the lush and verdant summit of Vaea in Samoa, the final resting place of renowned Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson and his beloved wife, Fanny Osbourne Stevenson, stands as a testament to their unforgettable journey together. This evocative photograph captures the serene beauty of their tomb, nestled amidst the tropical foliage, with the azure Pacific Ocean stretching out in the distance. Robert Louis Stevenson, born on November 13, 1850, in Edinburgh, Scotland, is celebrated for his literary works, including "Treasure Island," "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," and "Kidnapped." In 1889, Stevenson and his family, including Fanny and their three children, embarked on a voyage to the South Seas in search of better health for Fanny's tuberculosis. They eventually settled in Samoa, where they lived for three years before Stevenson's untimely death on December 3, 1894. Fanny, who survived her husband by 13 years, was buried beside him in accordance with his wishes. The inscription on the tomb reads, "Here lie Robert Louis Stevenson and Fanny Van de Grift Stevenson, born in Scotland and America, respectively, but married in the Hebrides, and living many years in Samoa." The tomb, adorned with fragrant garlands and flowers, is a popular pilgrimage site for fans of Stevenson's works and those seeking a connection to the rich history of literature and exploration. The peaceful surroundings offer a tranquil escape, inviting visitors to reflect on the enduring legacy of this remarkable couple and their unforgettable journey to the South Seas.
