EDITORS COMMENTS
Stephen Allen Benson (1816-1865), the second president of the African republic of Liberia, is depicted in this engraved portrait created in 1862, during his presidency which lasted from December 1856 to August 1864. Born in the United States in 1816, Benson was an American-Liberian businessman and politician who played a significant role in the development of Liberia as a free black settlement. He served as the country's Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States from 1853 to 1856, before being elected as the President. During his presidency, Benson focused on improving infrastructure, education, and economic development in Liberia. He imported machinery and tools to establish industries such as iron works and sawmills, and he also encouraged the cultivation of cash crops like coffee and palm oil. Benson's administration also made progress in education, establishing the first government-funded school in Monrovia and sending students abroad for further education. Despite his efforts, Benson faced numerous challenges during his presidency, including internal conflicts and external threats from European powers. He was also criticized for his authoritarian rule and for his close ties to American business interests. Nevertheless, Benson is remembered as a key figure in Liberia's early history, and his legacy continues to be celebrated as a symbol of African self-determination and independence. This engraved portrait of Stephen Allen Benson, created in 1862, provides a glimpse into the life of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the history of Liberia. It serves as a reminder of the challenges and triumphs of Liberia's early leaders and the ongoing struggle for self-determination and independence in Africa.
