EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Bishops Lydeard Station in Somerset during the 1960s. From platform level, we are transported back in time to witness the bustling activity that once graced this historic station. Originally opened in March 1862, Bishops Lydeard Station served as a vital transportation hub until its closure in January 1971. However, its significance was not forgotten, and it later became the terminus for the West Somerset Railway heritage line during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Fast forward to present times, and this charming station has regained its connection to the national rail network thanks to an agreement with GWR. In fact, Saturday services from Taunton were reintroduced during summer months in 2019. As we delve deeper into this image, our eyes are drawn towards the goods shed at Bishops Lydeard which now serves as a visitor centre and museum. This repurposed space offers visitors a glimpse into history while preserving memories of days gone by. Through this photograph, we can appreciate both the rich heritage of Bishops Lydeard Station and how it continues to evolve over time. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in keeping our past alive for future generations to explore and cherish.
