Bomb damage to No. 24 shop at Swindon Works in 1942

Swindon Works should have been a prime target for the German Luftwaffe, but the Works remained relatively unscathed from any air raids on the town. This image taken on 27th July 1942 shows a bomb crater on the edge of No.24 Shop in the Carriage and Wagon Works. This was not a direct hit, but the damaged roof and shattered windows of No.24 Shop illustrates the force of such a bomb explosion. Several workmen are examining the crater, probably thankful the bomb did not land any closer

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of a bomb attack on No. 24 shop at Swindon Works during World War II. Despite being a prime target for the German Luftwaffe, Swindon Works miraculously remained relatively unscathed from air raids on the town. The image, taken on July 27th, 1942, showcases a bomb crater situated on the edge of No. 24 Shop in the Carriage and Wagon Works. Although this particular strike was not a direct hit, it serves as a chilling testament to the destructive force unleashed by such bombings. The damaged roof and shattered windows of No. 24 Shop bear witness to the immense power behind each explosion. Intriguingly, several workmen can be seen examining the crater in this photograph – their presence perhaps indicative of their gratitude that fate had spared them from closer proximity to disaster. Their faces reflect relief mixed with solemnity as they contemplate what could have been. The resilience displayed by Swindon Works throughout this tumultuous period is truly remarkable; its ability to continue operating amidst constant threats is nothing short of awe-inspiring. This image stands as a poignant reminder of both the devastation caused by war and the strength exhibited by those who persevered through it all. Displayed at STEAM Museum of GWR (Great Western Railway), this print offers an invaluable glimpse into history while honoring those who worked tirelessly amidst adversity at Swindon Works during World War II.
