Originally established in 1871, this remarkable institution played a vital role in providing medical care to the community of Swindon and its surrounding villages. The central part of the building, seen prominently in the photograph, was once home to the XI Wiltshire Volunteer Rifle Corps armoury. However, it underwent a transformation and became an essential space within the hospital premises. This section housed both the operating theatre and ward, where countless lives were saved and healing took place. Flanking either side of this central structure are extensions that served various purposes over time. These wings accommodated important facilities such as nurses' quarters, ensuring dedicated healthcare professionals were always on hand to provide compassionate care. Additionally, one of these extensions housed a dispensary until 1892 when it was relocated elsewhere within the hospital grounds.
