Built in May 1922 at Swindon Works, this locomotive is a testament to the engineering prowess of the GWR during the early 20th century. The Star Class, designed by George Churchward, was a significant development in GWR locomotive design, featuring a Belpaire firebox and a superheated boiler for improved efficiency. No. 4062, named after the historic town of Malmesbury and its iconic abbey, was one of 120 locomotives built for the Star Class. The Star Class locomotives saw extensive use on the GWR network, hauling passenger and freight trains with ease. Their powerful 4-6-0 wheel arrangement and large boilers enabled them to tackle the challenging gradients and curves of the network's branch lines. No. 4062 Malmesbury Abbey was withdrawn from service in 1962, but was preserved for future generations to appreciate.
