EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases No. 4056 "Princess Margaret," a 4-6-0 Star Class Locomotive built by the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1914. The Star Class, also known as the 4000 Class, was a significant locomotive design for the GWR, with No. 4056 being one of the 100 engines produced between 1913 and 1915. The Star Class locomotives were renowned for their power and efficiency, featuring a Belpaire firebox and a large boiler that allowed for an increased working pressure and heating surface area. This design improvement led to improved steam pressure and, subsequently, greater pulling power. No. 4056, named after Princess Margaret of Connaught, the youngest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, was one of the last Star Class locomotives to be built before the onset of the First World War. The locomotive saw active service throughout the interwar period, hauling passenger and freight trains on the GWR network. This photograph captures the essence of the steam era, with No. 4056 proudly displaying its intricate design details, from the ornate nameplate to the detailed boiler and chimney. The steam billowing from the chimney and the smoke drifting through the air is a testament to the raw power of the engine, while the lush greenery in the background adds a sense of tranquility and serenity to the scene. The Star Class locomotives, including No. 4056, remain an essential part of railway history, representing the pinnacle of steam locomotive design and engineering during the early 20th century. Today, this magnificent machine is preserved at the Steam Museum of the GWR, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors with its rich history and engineering prowess.
