The Star Class, also known as the 4000 Class, was a significant locomotive design for the GWR, with No. 4056 being one of the 100 engines produced between 1913 and 1915. The Star Class locomotives were renowned for their power and efficiency, featuring a Belpaire firebox and a large boiler that allowed for an increased working pressure and heating surface area. This design improvement led to improved steam pressure and, subsequently, greater pulling power. No. 4056, named after Princess Margaret of Connaught, the youngest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, was one of the last Star Class locomotives to be built before the onset of the First World War. The locomotive saw active service throughout the interwar period, hauling passenger and freight trains on the GWR network.
