EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic moment of No. 4073 Caerphilly Castle's handover to the Science Museum at South Kensington in 1961. The 4-6-0 Castle class locomotive, built in 1923, is shown proudly displayed at Paddington Station, a testament to its long and distinguished service with the Great Western Railway (GWR). No. 4073 Caerphilly Castle was one of the last steam locomotives to be built at Swindon Works before the introduction of diesel and electric trains. It served faithfully on the GWR network for over four decades, pulling passenger trains on the busy main lines between London, Bristol, and South Wales. As the railway industry began to transition towards diesel and electric power, the steam era came to an end. In 1961, No. 4073 Caerphilly Castle was withdrawn from service and earmarked for preservation. The Science Museum at South Kensington, recognizing the historical significance of the locomotive, arranged for its acquisition. In this photograph, we see the proud engineers and railway staff of the GWR, who had cared for the locomotive throughout its working life, bidding farewell to Caerphilly Castle as it was prepared for its journey to its new home at the Science Museum. The image captures the sense of nostalgia and appreciation for the era of steam power, which was soon to be replaced by more modern technologies. Today, No. 4073 Caerphilly Castle remains a cherished exhibit at the Science Museum, a reminder of the golden age of steam rail travel and the dedicated men and women who kept the trains running. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the past, and a celebration of the enduring legacy of the steam locomotive.
