Star and Garter Hotel, Richmond on Thames

The Star and Garter Hotel at Richmond on Thames, Surrey, at the time when it was up for sale. Towards the end of the 19th century the hotel suffered a gradual decline in business. In June 1907 it was put up for auction, but the best offer was 20, 000. A later auction in April 1909 produced the same result. Earlier in 1909 a sale of furniture raised about 1, 500. In September 1911 it was heard that the hotel had been bought by a northern company with American connections for 18, 000. The hotel was sold twice more, then became a hospital during the First World War. It was demolished in 1919 "

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Star and Garter Hotel at Richmond upon Thames, Surrey, once a grand and historic building overlooking the River Thames, was put up for sale towards the end of the 19th century. By 1907, the once bustling establishment had suffered a gradual decline in business, and despite two attempts at auction in 1907 and 1909, the best offers failed to reach the asking price of 20,000 pounds. In 1909, a sale of furniture raised approximately 1,500 pounds. The hotel's fortunes seemed to change when it was reported in September 1911 that it had been bought by a northern company with American connections for 18,000 pounds. However, the hotel was sold twice more before its tragic demise. During the First World War, the Star and Garter Hotel became a hospital, providing essential medical services to the community. Sadly, the historic building was demolished in 1919, bringing an end to its storied history. This photograph captures the Star and Garter Hotel in its final days, standing proudly yet vacant and forlorn on the banks of the Thames.
