This exquisite miniature painting depicts St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, in the role of a deacon. Dated circa 35 AD, this historical artwork is a testament to the rich heritage of early Christian art. St. Stephen, a Hellenistic Jew who converted to Christianity, was one of the Seven Deacons appointed by the Apostles to distribute food and other resources to the needy in the early Christian community in Jerusalem. He was later falsely accused of blasphemy against God and Moses and was brought before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish supreme council. Refusing to recant his faith, St. Stephen was stoned to death, becoming the first Christian martyr and the prototype for later martyrs.
