EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intense spirituality and devotion of Saint Rosa de Lima, the Patron Saint of Peru and the Americas. Born in Lima, Peru, in 1586, Rosa was known for her profound mystical experiences and deep piety from a young age. She spent long hours in prayer and penance, often in solitude, and was renowned for her austere lifestyle and self-inflicted mortifications. Rosa's most famous vision occurred when she was just 16 years old, during which she saw the Virgin Mary holding a crucifix and surrounded by a large number of angels. This vision marked the beginning of Rosa's mystical career, and she went on to receive numerous other visions and revelations throughout her life. Despite her deep spiritual commitments, Rosa faced many challenges and obstacles. She was often criticized by her peers for her unconventional behavior and her refusal to marry. However, she remained steadfast in her faith and continued to live a life of prayer and penance. In 1617, Rosa's body was found to be miraculously preserved after her death, and she was canonized as a saint in 1668. This print, produced in the 19th century, captures the essence of Rosa's mystical experiences and her deep connection to the divine. The image of the saint, with her rosary beads and crucifix, serves as a powerful reminder of her unwavering faith and her enduring legacy as a spiritual role model.
