EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the revered figure of St. Jose Calasanz (1556-1648), a Spanish saint and the illustrious founder of the Order of Scholarum Piarum, also known as the Scolopians. Born in Villanueva de la Serena, Extremadura, Spain, Calasanz dedicated his life to the education and care of abandoned children in Rome during the 16th and 17th centuries. Calasanz's profound devotion to the welfare of these children was sparked by the sight of numerous orphans roaming the streets of Rome, left to fend for themselves in a world that often turned a blind eye to their plight. Moved by compassion, he established the first school for these children in 1597, providing them with an education and a safe haven from the harsh realities of the world. The Order of Scholarum Piarum, or Scolopians, which Calasanz founded in 1618, continued his mission of educating and caring for abandoned children, as well as providing education to the poor and disadvantaged. The order's influence spread throughout Europe, with schools and monasteries being established in various countries. Calasanz's tireless efforts to improve the lives of abandoned children earned him the admiration and respect of his contemporaries, as well as the recognition of the Catholic Church. He was canonized as a saint in 1767, and his legacy continues to inspire generations to this day. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Calasanz's unwavering dedication to the welfare of children, and the transformative power of education in improving the lives of those in need.
