Squire Bancroft, born as Butterfield, in the role of Jean de Seriex in the classic 1926 film "Fedora." Squire Bancroft (1841-1926) was an accomplished actor and manager of the American stage, making his mark in both the United States and Europe. Born in New York City, Bancroft began his career in the late 1860s as a member of the Booth Theatrical Family. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a leading man and eventually taking on managerial duties. In 1884, he formed his own theatrical company, the Squire Bancroft Stock Company, which toured the United States and Canada, producing plays by the likes of Shakespeare, Sheridan, and Shaw. In the early 1900s, Bancroft made the move to Europe, where he continued to act and manage, appearing in productions in London, Paris, and Berlin. He was particularly admired for his portrayals of historical figures, including Cardinal Richelieu and Jean de Seriex, the character he portrays in "Fedora." Directed by Gotthold Friedrich Loewe and starring Sarah Bernhardt, "Fedora" was released in 1926, marking the end of Bancroft's long and illustrious career.
