Spray at Gibraltar: Joshua Slocum's Historic Solo Voyage Around the World This evocative photograph captures the small but sturdy Spray moored at Gibraltar in 1895, during Joshua Slocum's historic solo voyage around the world. Slocum, an American sailor, had rebuilt the 36-foot wooden sloop in Maine, USA, in 1895, and set sail on an epic journey that would make him the first person to sail single-handed around the world. The Spray, a transport of maritime history, had already seen its fair share of adventures before reaching Gibraltar. Having been originally built in 1877, the boat had a rich past, having been used as a fishing boat and a transport vessel before Slocum acquired it. Slocum, an experienced sailor, recognized the potential in the Spray and set about rebuilding it, transforming it into a seaworthy vessel capable of withstanding the rigors of a solo voyage around the globe. As Slocum sailed into Gibraltar's harbor, he was met with a mixture of awe and skepticism from the local community. The idea of a solo voyage around the world was unheard of, and many doubted the small boat's ability to make it through the treacherous waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. But Slocum was undeterred, and he set sail once more, determined to prove the naysayers wrong. The photograph captures the Spray in all its glory, with its sails set and the rock of Gibraltar looming in the background. The image is a testament to the indomitable spirit of Slocum and the Spray, which went on to complete the journey, making history in the process. This photograph is a reminder of a bygone era of sailing and exploration, and a tribute to the human spirit of adventure.
