Sponsored walk, Lerryn, St Veep, Cornwall. December 1980
At the end of a 4 mile walk from Lostwithiel the participants got their feet wet at Lerryn. There are stepping stones across the river at this point but the walkers missed the low tide so had to paddle. The walk was sponsored as a fundraiser for a Community Centre in Lostwithiel. EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the spirit of community and adventure, this vintage print takes us back to a sponsored walk in Lerryn, St Veep, Cornwall in December 1980. The participants had just completed a challenging 4-mile trek from Lostwithiel when they encountered an unexpected obstacle at Lerryn - high tide! As they approached the river crossing with its inviting stepping stones, it became apparent that their timing was off. Undeterred by wet feet and determined to support their cause, parents and children alike rolled up their trousers or slipped on wellies as they waded through the shallow waters. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness the resilience and camaraderie of these walkers who united for a noble purpose: raising funds for a Community Centre in Lostwithiel. Amidst laughter and splashing sounds echoing through the air, one can't help but notice the beached boat resting peacefully nearby - perhaps serving as a reminder of Cornish maritime heritage. Photographed by Jonathan Barker, this image encapsulates not only a momentous occasion but also showcases the picturesque beauty of Cornwall's natural landscapes. Stepping stones leading towards distant horizons symbolize both physical progress and collective determination. This scene serves as an enduring testament to human perseverance against unforeseen challenges while fostering bonds within communities. It reminds us that even amidst adversity, there is always room for joyous memories and shared experiences.
