EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the entrance to Southwark Military Hospital in Dulwich, South London, during the First World War. The hospital was originally established in the St Saviour's workhouse infirmary, which was designed by Henry Jarvis and built in 1887 on East Dulwich Grove near Champion Hill station. During the early 20th century, the site served as a vital medical facility for wounded soldiers. The Victorian building, now overgrown with ivy, once stood as a symbol of care and support for those in need during a time of great hardship and poverty. The Union Jack proudly flies above the entrance, a testament to the patriotism and resilience of the British people during the war years. The entrance to the hospital is framed by the intricate details of the building's architecture, with its ornate columns and arches. The image transports us back to the 1880s, a time when workhouses were a common sight in the urban landscape, and the hospital's transformation from a workhouse infirmary to a military hospital reflects the adaptability and resourcefulness of the community during wartime. The hospital's history is rich and complex, with the site later becoming known as Southwark Hospital in 1921 and then Dulwich Hospital. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, inviting us to reflect on the sacrifices made by the soldiers who passed through its doors and the compassionate care they received during their time of need.
