1769 1851 Dieu Nicolas Soult

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Nicolas-Jean de Dieu Soult, one of the most renowned military commanders in French history. Born on March 3, 1769, in Montesquiou, France, Soult rose through the ranks of the military during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, earning the moniker "Bompland" due to his successes on the battlefield. Soult's military career began in earnest during the French Revolution, where he distinguished himself in several battles, including the Siege of Toulon in 1793 and the Battle of Hondschoote in 1798. However, it was during the Napoleonic Wars that Soult truly made his mark. He served as a marshal of the French Empire under Napoleon Bonaparte and played a key role in several major victories, including the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805 and the Battle of Wagram in 1809. Despite his loyalty to Napoleon, Soult was not above betraying him when it served his own interests. In 1814, when the Allied powers invaded France and overthrew Napoleon, Soult switched sides and joined the new government, leading the French forces in the final battles of the War of the Sixth Coalition. However, Soult's fortunes were short-lived, and he was eventually defeated and exiled to Spain. This portrait, taken in 1851, captures Soult in the twilight of his career, yet the fire and intensity in his eyes betray a man who lived a life of adventure, ambition, and military prowess. The image is a testament to Soult's indomitable spirit and his place in French military history as a brilliant and cunning commander.
