EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of takeoff for a Sopwith 2F1 Shipborne Camel from the flight deck of HMS Pegasus during World War One. The Royal Navy's aircraft carrier, HMS Pegasus, was the world's first dedicated aircraft carrier, commissioned in 1918. The Sopwith Camel, a single-seat biplane, was one of the most successful and iconic aircraft of the First World War, with over 5,000 produced and serving in both the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. In this image, the Camel's pilot, clad in a leather flying helmet and goggles, sits poised at the ready as the ship's crew maneuver the aircraft into position at the bow of the vessel. With a powerful shove from the men on the deck, the Camel begins to roll forward, its propeller churning up the waves. The momentary burst of steam from the ship's funnel signals the release of the aircraft's brakes, and with a roar of its engine, the Camel lifts into the air, leaving a trail of spray in its wake. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the pioneering aviators and sailors who made history by taking the fight to the skies from the decks of ships. The Sopwith Camel's successful deployment from HMS Pegasus marked a significant milestone in naval aviation and paved the way for the development of modern aircraft carriers and the role of the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy in protecting the United Kingdom's skies and waters.
