Soldiers with a Daimler-Foster tractor, WW1

Soldiers with a large Daimler-Foster tractor marked OHMS (On His Majestys Service) in a field during the First World War. Built for Daimler by Foster of Lincoln, this design did not work well on the battlefield and the wheels were replaced with caterpillar tracks, leading to the development of the tank. Date: 1914-1918

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time during the First World War, as soldiers stand beside a large and imposing Daimler-Foster tractor marked "OHMS" (On His Majesty's Service) in a muddy field. Built in collaboration between the renowned Daimler Motor Company and Foster of Lincoln, this tractor was intended to provide much-needed mobility and support for the British military during the war. However, the design, which featured massive wheels, proved to be less than effective on the battlefield. The harsh realities of trench warfare and the treacherous terrain of the Western Front soon exposed the limitations of the tractor's wheeled design. The heavy wheels bogged down easily in the mud, and the lack of maneuverability hindered the soldiers' ability to transport supplies and equipment to the front lines. In response to these challenges, the military and engineers began to explore alternative solutions. One such solution was the development of caterpillar tracks, which would eventually lead to the creation of the tank. The soldiers in this photograph, with their determined expressions and weary gazes, bear witness to the ingenuity and resilience required to adapt and overcome the challenges of the battlefield. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the innovation and determination that characterized the First World War, as well as the often-painful process of learning from failure and moving forward with new solutions. The large Daimler-Foster tractor in the image may not have been the answer, but it played a crucial role in the development of military technology that would change the course of warfare forever.
