EDITORS COMMENTS
Snowdrop: A Tale of Enchantment and Curse by Katharine Cameron (1904) In this hauntingly beautiful illustration by Glasgow-born artist Katharine Cameron, we find Snowdrop, the iconic character from the beloved fairy tale "Snow White," lying lifelessly among the snow-covered ground. The once radiant and vibrant Snow White, now transformed into a snowdrop flower, exudes an ethereal and otherworldly charm. Cameron's masterful use of color and texture adds depth to the magical and enchanting atmosphere of the scene. The delicate petals of the snowdrop flower, with their translucent white hue, contrast sharply against the dark, somber background, creating a sense of both beauty and sorrow. Snowdrop's tale is one of both enchantment and curse. Having been driven into the forest by her jealous stepmother, the wicked queen, Snow White is discovered by a band of dwarves who take her in and care for her. However, the queen, in her jealousy, orders a huntsman to kill Snow White. The huntsman, unable to carry out the deed, instead leaves her in the forest, where she is discovered by the dwarves once more. This time, they mistake her for dead and mourn her loss, unaware that she has only fallen into a deep, magical sleep. This poignant and evocative image by Katharine Cameron captures the essence of the Snow White story, transporting us to a world of myth and magic, where enchantment and sorrow intertwine.
