Skull and Crossbones - Inverted
The Jolly Roger is the name given to any of various flags flown to identify a ships crew as pirates. The flag most usually identified as the Jolly Roger today is the skull and crossbones, being a flag consisting of a skull above two long bones set in an x-mark arrangement. This design was used by four pirates, captains Edward England, John Taylor, Sam Bellamy and John Martel.Despite its appearance in popular culture, plain black flags were often employed by most pirates in the 17th-18th century. Historically, the flag was flown to frighten pirates victims into surrendering without a fight, since it conveyed the message that the attackers were outlaws who would not consider themselves bound by the usual rules of engagement and might, therefore, slaughter those they defeated

EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image depicts the infamous Skull and Crossbones flag, also known as the Jolly Roger, which has become synonymous with piracy and maritime terror. The symbol consists of a human skull above two long bones arranged in an x-mark. Contrary to popular belief, this design was not the most commonly used pirate flag during the 17th and 18th centuries. Instead, plain black flags were more frequently hoisted to instill fear in victims and signal that the attacking crew were outlaws who would not abide by the usual rules of engagement. The Skull and Crossbones flag gained notoriety through the exploits of four notorious pirate captains: Edward England, John Taylor, Sam Bellamy, and John Martel. The flag's grim design was intended to intimidate victims into surrendering without a fight, as it conveyed the message that the pirates would spare no mercy to those they defeated. The anatomy of the skull, with its hollow eye sockets and gaping jaw, exudes an ominous and fearsome presence. The crossbones, formed by the intersecting femurs, add to the flag's overall terrifying appearance. The inverted design, with the skull's head facing left, is a less common variation, but it still effectively conveys the sense of impending doom and terror associated with piracy. The Jolly Roger remains a fascinating and enduring symbol of piracy and the lawless spirit of the high seas. Its history is one of fear, crime, and adventure, and it continues to capture the imagination of people around the world.
