Sir William served with great distinction in the military, holding command of British III Corps and later heading the 23rd Army Corps. Born into the noble Pulteney family, Sir William's military career began in the Grenadier Guards in 1881. He rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and strategic acumen. During the First World War, Sir William's leadership proved invaluable, particularly during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. His III Corps played a crucial role in the capture of the village of Beaumont-Hamel, a key objective in the initial assault.
