EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Samuel Baker (1821-1893): A Pioneering Explorer of Central Africa's Nile River This engraving depicts Sir Samuel White Baker, a prominent English explorer, as he was portrayed in 1873. Baker is best known for his extensive exploration of Central Africa, where he embarked on a mission to discover the source of the Nile River in the early 1860s. Although John Speke and James Grant are credited with being the first Europeans to find the source of the Nile, Baker was able to claim the distinction of being the first European to find Lake Albert Nyanza, one of the largest lakes on the Nile. Born in 1821, Baker's fascination with Africa began at a young age. He joined the British Army and served in various capacities before turning to exploration. In 1858, he was appointed the Governor-General of Equatoria, a region in southern Sudan, and it was during this time that he began his search for the Nile's source. Baker's exploration of Central Africa was marked by his determination and perseverance. He faced numerous challenges, including harsh terrain, disease, and opposition from local tribes. However, he was able to make significant discoveries, including the discovery of Lake Albert Nyanza in 1871. Despite the achievements of Speke and Grant, Baker's claim to being the first European to find the source of the Nile remains a subject of debate in historical circles. Regardless, Baker's contributions to the exploration of Central Africa are undeniable, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of explorers and adventurers. This engraving, which pictures Baker in his later years, is a testament to his remarkable achievements and the indelible mark he left on the history of exploration.
