EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Robert Brownrigg (1759-1833), a distinguished British military officer and colonial administrator, is depicted in this elegant portrait. Born in County Down, Ireland, Brownrigg joined the British Army in 1775 and rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and military prowess. In 1811, Brownrigg was appointed as the Governor of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), a position he held until 1820. During his tenure, he focused on strengthening British control over the island and improving the administration of justice. Brownrigg's most notable achievement was the suppression of the 1817-1818 uprising led by the leader Maruthanpillai, which threatened the British presence in the eastern province of the island. Brownrigg's decisive actions put an end to the rebellion and secured British rule. Brownrigg's governorship was also marked by his efforts to promote economic development. He encouraged the cultivation of coffee and tea, and initiated infrastructure projects such as the construction of roads and bridges. Brownrigg's reforms laid the foundation for the modernization of Ceylon's economy and administration. After leaving Ceylon, Brownrigg returned to Britain and was knighted in 1825 for his services to the Crown. He continued to serve in various capacities in the British military and colonial administration until his retirement in 1833. This portrait, taken during his time as Governor of Ceylon, captures the essence of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the history of Sri Lanka during the British colonial period.
