EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Redvers Henry Buller (1839-1908): A Prominent British General of the Late Victorian Era This sepia-toned photograph captures the distinguished visage of Sir Redvers Henry Buller, a renowned British general who served in various military campaigns during the late Victorian era. Born on March 24, 1839, in London, Buller was educated at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich and began his military career in 1856. The image showcases Buller's impressive uniform, adorned with numerous medals and decorations, signifying his military accomplishments. His collar bears the insignia of the 1st Royal Dragoons, a regiment with which he had a long association. The large winged collar, a common feature of military uniforms during this period, adds an air of grandeur to the image. Buller's prominent moustache and stern expression convey a sense of determination and leadership. He rose to prominence during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, where he served under Lord Chelmsford and played a key role in the Battle of Isandlwana. Despite the defeat of the British forces, Buller was commended for his bravery and leadership. Later, Buller served in the Second Anglo-Afghan War in 1878-1880 and the Anglo-Egyptian War in 1882. He was appointed as the Governor of New Zealand in 1887 and served until 1894. Buller's military career came to an end following the failure of the British invasion of the Transvaal in 1896, during the Second Boer War. Despite the ups and downs of his military career, Sir Redvers Henry Buller remains an important figure in British military history. This photograph is a testament to his military prowess and the era in which he served.
