Sir Martin Frobisher (c. 1535-1594): A Visionary Elizabethan Explorer and Seafarer This engraving captures the image of Sir Martin Frobisher, an intrepid Elizabethan explorer and seafarer, who made significant contributions to England's maritime history. Born around 1535, Frobisher's adventurous spirit led him to explore new territories and defend his homeland against foreign threats. Frobisher first gained recognition for his exploratory voyages to the Arctic in search of the Northwest Passage. His expeditions, which began in 1576, yielded the discovery of Frobisher Bay in what is now Nunavut, Canada. Although he did not find the passage, his voyages provided valuable insights into the geography and resources of the Arctic region. Frobisher's military prowess was showcased during the English defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. He commanded the Triumph, one of the ships that played a crucial role in the Battle of Gravelines.
