EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Sir Marcus Samuel, Viscount Bearsted, in his mayoral robes as the Lord Mayor of London from 1902 to 1903. Born in 1853, Samuel was a prominent British petroleum entrepreneur, whose business acumen and innovative strategies revolutionized the global petroleum industry. Samuel's journey to success began when he joined his family's trading business in Calcutta, India, at the age of 17. He later moved to London and established his own company, Marcus Samuel & Co., which became a leading importer of kerosene and other petroleum products. Samuel's entrepreneurial spirit and business savvy led him to explore new opportunities in the emerging petroleum industry. In the late 1890s, Samuel acquired rights to drill for oil in Persia, which proved to be a lucrative venture. He went on to establish the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, which later became British Petroleum (BP), one of the world's largest oil and gas companies. Samuel's contributions to the petroleum industry extended beyond business. He played a significant role in the development of the Port of London, where he oversaw the construction of the Millwall Docks, which facilitated the import and export of petroleum products. As Lord Mayor of London, Samuel was a respected figurehead of authority and civic pride. In this photograph, he is seen wearing the ceremonial robes of the office, which symbolize the historical significance and tradition of the position. The image captures a moment in time when Samuel, as a successful entrepreneur and community leader, embodied the spirit of innovation, enterprise, and public service that continues to define London's rich history.
