EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Martin Frobisher (1535-1594): English Navigator and Explorer in Full Armor This striking image captures Sir Martin Frobisher, an English navigator and explorer, dressed in the ornate armor of the late Elizabethan era. Born in 1535, Frobisher made a name for himself as a skilled seafarer and explorer, leading several voyages to the New World in search of the Northwest Passage. Frobisher's first voyage to the New World took place in 1576, during which he discovered Frobisher Bay in what is now Nunavut, Canada. He believed he had discovered a new route to China, but upon further examination, it was determined that he had actually reached North America. Despite this setback, Frobisher continued to explore, leading two more expeditions in 1577 and 1578. This print, created in 1594, depicts Frobisher in his finest armor, complete with a lacy collar and a long, flowing white beard. The intricate details of the armor, from the embossed patterns to the delicate lacing, showcase the craftsmanship of the time. Frobisher's stern expression and confident posture convey his determination and courage as a navigator and explorer. Despite his contributions to English exploration, Frobisher faced criticism and controversy throughout his career. Some accused him of exaggerating his discoveries and misleading the public, while others praised his bravery and tenacity. Regardless of the opinions of his contemporaries, Sir Martin Frobisher remains an important figure in English maritime history, and this print serves as a testament to his legacy as a skilled navigator and explorer.
